Humpback Whales of the Silver BanksThe Silver Banks, located off the north coast of the Dominican Republic, is the mating and calving ground for the North Atlantic Humpback Whale. The area where we anchor is called "The
Nursery" due to the large number of mothers and calves.
Over 2,000 whales, averaging 45 tons and 45 feet in length migrate from the Northern Atlantic down to this area annually. Their journey culminates with mating and birthing in these warmer waters from January to
early April each year.
The first month is primarily bulls jockeying for position as the cows become fertile. With a gestation period of twelve to thirteen months, February and March bring more calving situations, first breaths, teaching junior to breech and other interesting whale activity. Since a female will go into estrus and is capable of conception three to four days after giving birth, a large number of males are drawn right next
to the boat.
This invites awesome photographic opportunities and, potentially, soft-in-water encounters that you will cherish forever!
The Bottom Time II will work as mother ship during the week with us venturing off on small launches from 8 to 11:30 am and 1:30 - 5 pm daily. Pods of dolphin have also been known to appear and a day of scuba might be made available (conditions permitting) for those that are interested. We can even partake in sea kayaking, snorkeling, star gazing and moonlight swims if you desire.
